PREVALENCE OF HEPATITIS B VIRUS MARKERS AMONG ADULTS IN A LARGE INDUSTRIAL REGION

Viral hepatitis B (HBV) remains one of the most significant medical and social problems of global health.

The aim of the study was to study the prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers among the adult population of a large industrial region.

Materials and methods. The study material included serum samples from adults (n=467, men/women — 179/288; average age was 45.6 years), divided into age groups: 20-29 years, 30-39 years, 40-49 years, 50-59 years and over 60 years. Serological (HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBcore) and molecular biological (HBV DNA) markers of hepatitis B were determined by ELISA and PCR using domestic test systems.

Results. The dominant condition for maintaining an epidemiologically significant reservoir of HBV among the adult population of the region remains the low level of population immunity among people over 30 years of age, determining the continuing epidemiological significance of HBV in the region and the need to optimize regional preventive measures taking into account the age-related characteristics of the immune response.
